"The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare;
there were not many visions.
One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out,and
Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord,
where the ark of God was.
Then the Lord called Samuel.
Samuel answered, 'Here I am.' "
- First Samuel 3:1-4 |

God Breaks the Spiritual Famine with a Message of Judgment |
|
|
When the Lord speaks in his tabernacle to Samuel he is NOT speaking to the attending priests, but instead speaks to the prophet. Samuel is given a word of rebuke and judgment for the negligent priesthood which had rejected his word. This priesthood will now be neglected and rejected by the Lord.
The word “vision” is the Hebrew word hazon which refers to revelation from God and the coming of his word. The prophet would receive the hazon, or revelation, and speak that received word of revelation to the people. Hazon, or “vision,” is a technical term for the revelation from God that came to men through a prophet. This word hazon appears in the scriptural titles of Isaiah, Obadiah and Nahum.
In Samuel’s youth it was infrequent for God to reveal his word and, thus, it was rare that the prophets had a word to speak. This was a time of spiritual famine. God withholding his word is a source of punishment that results in judgment on a people. Amos 8:11-12 predicts a time when God’s word would not be sent to the earth and people would face a period of suffering during a famine of the Word of God. Psalm 74:9 and Ezekiel 7:26 identify periods of spiritual famine. |

“Most theists are deists most of the time, in practice if not in theory. They practice the absence of God instead
of
the presence of God.”

Stigma (Gr) – Mark (Eng) – stigma is a Greek word that means “a tattooed mark,” “a brand” and
“a mark burnt in.” In Galatians 6:17 Paul uses stigma to refer to physical marks in Paul’s body such as scars from beatings, etc. that were the result of testifying of Christ. Paul compares
his stigma with the Judaizers stigma of circumcision. |

An ostracon (a piece of broken pottery with an inscription of writing on it) was found in 1976 in a grain silo at Eben Ezer with five lines of writing on it from the second quarter of the 11th century, 1075-1050 BC (the time of the Israelite’s battle with the Philistines at Aphek in First Samuel 4) were translated as saying:
LINE 1: Unto the field we came, to Aphek from Shiloh.
LINE 2: The Kittim took it and came to Azor, to Dagon lord of Ashdod and to Gath.
LINE 3: ...Kiriath Jearim.
LINE 4: The companion of the foot soldiers, Hophni, came to tell the elders, “A horse has come and upon it was my brother for us to bury.”
LINE 5: Alphabet

Do I give up when I face obstacles?
Is my faith based in circumstances or in the promises and the Truth of the Word of God?
I will deal with opposition and obstacles by seeing the future and victory promised in the God’s Word. |
