January 31 - Morning
"Select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.
Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said."
-Exodus 18:21-24 |

The Mighty Leader Receives Advice in Humility |
|
|
Moses is to get help from men who are described by Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law and a priest of Midian, as:
- “Capable” - chayil is a Hebrew word that also means “brave” and “heroic,” and referred to the “upper class” of men who had already experienced success and held positions of leadership. The word chayil indicates physical strength used with ability and efficiency. (Also in Josh 1:14; Jud 6:12; Prov.12:4; 31:10).
- “Fear God” – which indicates a life of morals and dedication that originate from a reverence for the Lord.
- “Trustworthy men” – ‘emeth is the Hebrew word that means “truth,” faithful,” and “firmness.” ‘Emeth is used as “stability,” in Isaiah 39:8 and Jeremiah 33:6; and, as “reliability” in Nehemiah 7:2. These men are to men Moses can count on and find dependable.
- Men who “hate dishonest gain” – these men must not be willing to entertain the thought of receiving a bribe in exchange for twisting the truth. They must be unwilling to compromise wisdom and unwilling to ignore the facts for convenience or self-benefit.
Even with the Lord leading, there was need for an organized society and a government that handled judicial decisions. But, these human systems and institutions had to reflect the Lord’s nature and his commitment to truth.
Notice that Jethro qualified his advice as a viable option only if “God so commands.” Jethro presented good advice from his position and from his leadership experience, but he also wanted his advice to be accepted and approved by the Lord.
The earliest stages of the Mosaic social and legal system where based on the advice of a Midian priest who himself knew the Lord. Jethro would have been of the same caliber of believer and priest as Melchizedek was in ancient Salem.
In typical fashion, Moses, the great man of powerful words and deeds, responded to this advice with humility. Moses willingly put this wise advice into practice without having to explain his failure to see this resolution for himself. Nor did Moses make excuses for the breakdown of his previous system. |

"There is no such thing as philosophy-free science.
There is only science whose philosophical baggage is taken on board without examination."

The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), founded in 1942, used these seven doctrinal points as a statement of faith:
1) The Bible is the only inspired, infallible authority
2) God is one in three persons
3) Jesus is God, born of a virgin, sinless, bodily resurrected, ascended
and will return
4) Salvation is by regeneration by the Holy Spirit
5) The Holy Spirit dwells in the believer
6) Everyone will be resurrected and judged for eternal life or damnation
7) Believers are spiritually united with Jesus Christ |

This is buried first century pavement (think New Testament times) that runs along the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. The column (with an "83" image behind Galyn's right shoulder) is the beginning of one side of a colonnaded street that ran to the left (west) of this photo after coming to a "T" with this road. The base stones of the Western Wall are to the right of this photo and remain in near perfect condition. 2,000 years ago this pavement would have been in the open sun light (thus the need for the colonnaded street), but today it is a tunnel buried well below the surface with streets and residences above.
