Fearing the Word of God |
|
|
Before the plague of thunder and hail, the Lord reveals the timing and the plague to give the people and Pharaoh a chance to respond ahead of time. Their response would be a sign of faith in Moses’ words and in the reality of the Lord and his power. The announcement ahead of time would also be a chance to expose Pharaoh’s inability to respond. Even though Pharaoh and the gods of Egypt new the plague and the time it would strike, they were yet impotent. Those who responded in faith by bringing their slaves and livestock inside would have seen it as an act of goodwill and may later respond positively towards the goodness and grace of God. They may have encouraged Pharaoh to let the Hebrew people go so that the people of Egypt could be spared the wrath of God and, in exchange, receive the benefits of his grace.
It is interesting that the officials of Pharaoh had enough information to know that the word of the Lord was true and they responded to the warning of the Lord’s word. They “feared the word of the Lord” in spite of the fact that they knew the northern part of Egypt, the Nile Delta region, received about ten inches of rain annually and this amount of rainfall drops off to a mere zero to one inch of annual rain fall in southern Egypt (or, Upper Egypt). A mighty storm with thunder and hail would be a major interruption to normal life and normal weather in Egypt. |

Natan (Hb) - Repay (Eng) – natan is the Hebrew word that means “to give,” “to put,” “to present,” and, so also, “to repay.” Often the Old Testament people were natan for the deeds they did.
What the people did was natan to them, or what the people gave was given to them and
what the people presented was presented back to them. |

The Biblical account of Solomon’s enormous amount of gold and his use of gold for 500 gold plated shields, drinking goblets, and more
(First Kings 10:18-20) is typical for the practice and records of that time period. Egypt produced one ton of gold a year from the mines in Nubia (Nub is Egyptian word for gold) and in the desert east of the Nile. Spain produced and shipped 1,400 tons of gold per year to Rome. The gold mines that Solomon accessed in Ophir were still in use in the 800’s AD. Of course, silver was not used because it was too common according to
First Kings 10:21. |

Do I fear the Word of God?
When the written text of Scripture commands something do I do it?
When the Bible gives advice, do I follow it?
I will fear the Word of the Lord by using it as
"a lamp for my feet and a light on my path." |
