August 7 - Morning
(Jeremiah said:)
“You are always righteous, Lord,
when I bring a case before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why do all the faithless live at ease?
You have planted them, and they have taken root;
they grow and bear fruit.
You are always on their lips
but far from their hearts.
Yet you know me, Lord;
you see me and test my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep to be butchered!
Set them apart for the day of slaughter!
How long will the land lie parched
and the grass in every field be withered?
Because those who live in it are wicked,
the animals and birds have perished.
Moreover, the people are saying,
‘He will not see what happens to us.’ ”
(The Lord replies to Jeremiah’s complaint:)
“If you have raced with men on foot
and they have worn you out,
how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble in safe country,
how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?
Your relatives, members of your own family —
even they have betrayed you;
they have raised a loud cry against you!
Do not trust them,
though they speak well of you.”
- Jeremiah 12:1-7 |

Life is Unfair and Then It Gets Worse |

Jeremiah brings a complaint to the Lord concerning how unfair life is, but the Lord simply says,
“You are stumbling over things natural men stumble over. Toughen up! If you are going to be a prophet you will be dealing with supernatural unfairness!...oh, and by the way, your natural situation is worse than you know!”
(A very loose paraphrase of Jeremiah 12:1-7)
The first illustration the Lord uses compares Jeremiah’s complaining to Jeremiah being worn out racing on foot against other men (natural). But, Jeremiah the prophet will be called upon to race on foot against horses (spiritual)! Jeremiah will have to move beyond complaining about his natural limitations and learn to access supernatural strength.
The second illustration pictures Jeremiah stumbling and struggling while he runs in an open place
and on a level surface. In his life before the Lord, Jeremiah has been like a fatigued runner constantly tripping and falling as he attempts to run on an oval track marked with running lanes. Then, the Lord asks how Jeremiah will do when he is called upon to run his race through the overgrown thickets in the uneven, unmarked wilderness along the winding Jordan River if Jeremiah thinks running on a level surface with marked running lanes was too difficult?
The Lord then gives Jeremiah something else to handle. Jeremiah will either continue to worry
and complain like a natural man, or he will learn to handle these situations. Instead of a word of encouragement, the Lord shares this inside information: Jeremiah’s own family
members are plotting to kill him! |

“Are you hastening toward your heavenly home? Then with Christ’s help, keep this little rule that we have written for beginners…Your way of acting should be different from the world’s way; the love of Christ must come before all else. You are not to act in anger or nurse a grudge. Rid your heart of all deceit.”
– Benedict in his book “The Rule” written as a guide for monasteries and handbook to living the Christian life around 515 AD (read the book here) |

Jonah 2:5-6 describes the mountains at the bottom of the ocean. It wasn’t until the twentieth-century that mankind actually descended to the depths of the ocean to view what the Bible describes in seventh-century BC. |

The Philistine city of Ekron referred to in 1 Samuel 5:10 has been discovered. It was positively identified as Ekron in 1997 by an inscription found in the remains of a temple dedicated to Baal. The inscription mentions the name of a goddess who was of Greek origin which agrees with Jeremiah's biblical identification of the Philistines as of being of Greek origin (Jeremiah 47:4)
