October 27 - Morning
" What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.
As it is written:
'See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.' ”
- Romans 9:30-33 |

The Issue is Faith |
|
|
The way to attain a righteous standing before God is to trust his promise. Believing God’s promise is the way to please him, because “without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6) But, trying to earn a righteous standing before God by engaging in righteous exploits or demonstrations of righteous abilities is an indication that the person has not trusted God’s promise. An attempt to earn righteousness through works shows contempt for God’s promise. This person has “stumbled over the stumbling stone.”
Paul says that it is those “who did not pursue righteousness” are the ones who have believed the promise, while those who “who pursued the law as the way of righteousness” have rejected the promise because in their understanding they had already become righteous.
The promise of God is power, but it must be believed. The righteousness of God is transforming, but it must be received. The Words of God are renewing, but they must be understood. All of these (belief in the promise, receiving the righteousness, renewal by the word) will empower and transform the believer to be righteous. And, from this position the believer will produce the fruit of righteousness instead of doing works of righteousness.
A person that has been transformed by the promise, by the Spirit and by the Word of God will produce fruits of righteousness from their new nature. But, a person who has rejected the promise, rejected the Spirit and rejected the correct understanding of the Word of God will continue pursuing righteousness in their own effort because they stumbled over this very basic principle:
“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

Qanno' (Hb) - Jealous (Eng) - the Hebrew qanno' is an adjective formed from the Hebrew root
word qn' which means "intensity." The Hebrew verb form is qana' which means "to be zealous."
The adjective qanno' is used only to describe God, who is said to be qanno' (or, "intensely zealous") in the second commandment (Ex. 20:5) and, again, in Joshua 24:19 the Lord is an "intensely
zealous" God. This zealousness causes God to burn with anger towards sin against him,
to defend his reputation and to protect his people as their Savior.

The following social customs and laws were only appropriate during the days
of the patriarchs. Because social standards changed these things would only have made sense to men like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob:
- silver shekels for the price of a slave (Gn.37:28
- the form of treaties and covenants (Gn.21, 26, 31)
- international affairs of (Genesis 14)
- interaction and trade with Egypt (Gn 12, 45-47)
- adoption of sons through surrogate mother
(Gn 16:2-3; 30:1-3) |

Do I trust my own ability? Do I try to please God by attempting to earn his favor?
I will trust God's promise and allow God's Truth to transform me,
so that I might produce the fruit of the Spirit in my life. |
