SHEEP GATE - North Wall |
SHEEP GATE - North Wall |
The north wall of Nehemiah chapter 3 and 12. |
|
North wall of Solomon's and Nehemiah's Temple Mount was buried by Herod's expansion to the north.
Herod's expansion to the north covered over the gates and most of their stones seen and built in Nehemiah's time.
John 5:2 mentions another Sheep Gate in the north wall of Herod's New Testament Temple Mount and says it was near the Pool of Bethesda. This pool is labeled on this image.

|
The Sheep Gate of Nehemiah 3 was buried by Herod's expansion, but became a cistern with a cistern wellhead still visible and used on the Temple Mount today. This cistern head leads down to the Sheep Gate and its underground passageway from the days of Nehemiah. |

This Sheep Gate became known as the Tadi Gate.

This is a portion of the survey diagram made by Warren for his 1865 book showing the north side of the Temple Mount. The underground chamber, passageway and tunnel for the Sheep Gate covered by Herod's expansion were found, measured and explored by Warren who then marked them on his survey map. |

TOWER OF HANANEEL - North Wall |
TOWER OF HANANEEL - North Wall |
Solomon's original square platform surrounded by Herod's expanded platform extending the north, west and south which covered the locations of Nehemiah's Gates on the northside.
The Tower of Hananeel was in the northwest corner of Nehemiah's Temple Mount. Cuts in the bedrock can be seen just north of the stones from Solomon's west temple mount wall that is seen in the photo below.
|
|
|
|
The Tower of Hananeel was buried by Herod's northern expansion of the Temple Mount. Herod replaced the Tower of Hananeel with a "tower" of his own to serve the same purpose as the Old Testament Tower of Hananeel when he built Fort Antonia in the same location, just further to the north on the bedrock that continued to rise as Mount Moriah continued north. This bedrock can still be seen today in the northwest corner of the Temple Mount. |

DUNG GATE - South Wall |
DUNG GATE - South Wall |
The south side of the city where Nehemiah traveled in Nehemiah 2 during his night time inspection. Nehemiah would have traveled along the Central Valley until it met the Hinnom Valley that joined the Kidron Valley on the east side of the city. Nehemiah then headed north along the wall above the Kidron Valley until he came to the collapsed terraces below the City of David. At that point Nehemiah continued north away from the walls out in the Kidron Valley. |

Looking down from the top of the Stepped Stone Structure and on top of the stones of Nehemiah's rebuilt (but, smaller) city walls on the east side. From here it is clear how steep the drop into the Kidron Valley. In the Old Testament the city was expanded by creating living space below along this drop by creating flat living space by building retaining walls and terraces.
In 586 the terraces began to collapse leaving piles of rubble that Nehemiah could not pass through. Recently this area has been excavated revealing many great finds from the days of the Babylonian destruction of 586 BC and before.

GIHON SPRINGS - East Wall |
The Gihon Springs are located low in the Kidron Valley below the Stepped Stone Structure. Water flows from here into Hezekiah's Tunnel that is cut under the City of David. In the Old Testament and before David took the city the water would also flow in open channels south along the Kidron Valley and water the gardens along the east side of this city. |

View of east side of Jerusalem and City of David from the Mount of Olives. Looking over the Kidron Valley the Stepped Stone Structure (Jebusite Wall or Terrace) is seen with the rebuilt stones of Nehemiah's time outlined in red. The fortress that David took from the Jebusites sat on top the Stepped Stone Structure. David made this his stronghold, or fortress, and built his palace next to it on the north (or, right) side. The collapsed terraces that Nehemiah had to go around in Nehemiah chapter 2 are at the bottom below the stepped stone structure and along the slope of the city and in the Kidron Valley going south (left) |
