September 6 - Morning
"The sun will be turned to darknes and the
moon to blood before the coming of the great
and dreadful day of the Lord.
And everyone who calls on the name
of the Lord will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance."

Deliverance on Mount Zion in Jerusalem |
|
|
Today’s devotional verses refer to the time of universal judgment known as “The Day of the Lord.”
It is the third of three judgments referred to by Joel. The first was the contemporary locust
invasion of the land of Judah (sometime between 828-700 BC) that was occurring as Joel
wrote his prophecy. The second was the prophesied Assyrian invasion of northern Israel
coming in 723-721 BC or the Babylonian invasion of southern Judah that would occur in
three waves: 605, 597 and 588-586 BC. The third is the Lord’s return to earth to
“dwell in Zion” which is the “holy hill” in Jerusalem (Joel 3:17) where
“there will be deliverance” (Joel 2:32) “on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem.”
The Day of the Lord will be proceeded by “wonders in the heavens” (Joel 2:30) which include
“the sun will be turned to darkness” and “the moon to blood.” These signs indicate at some
level and at some point in time God’s direct and dramatic supernatural intervention into the
history of mankind. The darkened sun could refer to an eclipse which was a terrifying event
and a bad omen in the ancient world. The red moon could be caused by earthquakes that
proceed and accompany the Lord’s return. The Day of the Lord will be a day of judgment
on the unbelieving nations and unrepentant Israel, but also a day of physical deliverance
and fulfilled spiritual salvation for “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord” including
the re-gathered and restored nation of Israel. |

Gabriel and Michael are the only two angels (besides, Satan) named in the Bible. Both are mentioned in the New Testament, but only Gabriel makes both a OT and NT appearance. |

Beriyt (Hb) - Covenant (Eng) - Beriyt comes from the parent root word bar meaning grain. This bar or, grain, was fed to livestock to fatten them up to prepare them for slaughter. Two other Hebrew words come from bar:
1) beriy translated fat;
2) barut translated meat.
So, bar, beriy and barut all refer to livestock and slaughtering them.
The phrase "make a covenant" in Hebrew is this phrase is karat beriyt.
The word karat means to cut.
Beriyt refers to the animal cut for the covenant. |

In the upper city of Arad is an Israelite Temple, or High Place, of worship. These were a violation of the Law of God. This picture was taken in the outer court with the altar being the square formation to the center. There is a stone slab on top. This had been covered with dirt around 701 BC during Hezekiah's reform. (click on image for larger size) |
