September 16 - Evening
"At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you;
I will rescue the lame and gather those who have
been scattered...at that time I will bring you home.
I will give you honor and praise among all the
peoples of the earth when I restore your fortunes
before your very eyes," says the Lord.
- Zephaniah 3:19-20

The Lord's Promise to Israel |
|
|
Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of Josiah along with Nahum and Jeremiah around 625 BC. Zephaniah warned of coming destruction to the nations and to Judah. He identifies himself with a lengthy genealogy at the start of the book which means he felt he had some authority in speaking
to the issues in his book. It also indicates he wasnt fearful of being held accountable for his prophecies recorded in his book which spoke of the near future and beyond to the ultimate
restoration of Israel. This restoration is his subject in 3:19-20
In 3:19 God says that in the day that he judges and purifies the Gentile nations he will rescue
the lame of Israel that have been scattered among the nations and bring you home to
the land of Israel.
3:20 continues in the same line of promise to Israel but specifies that at the time of this
restoration the Lord will give them honor and praise among all the other nations. Israel
will no longer wait, but will see with their own eyes their fortunes be restored to them.
Notice how many times the Lord uses the personal pronoun I when he makes these promises:
I will deal
, I will rescue
, I will bring
, I will give
, When I restore, etc. A total of
seven or eight times in 3:19-20 God puts his name, reputation and promise on the line
through Zephaniah, who himself tagged his name to these promises in 1:1! |

Charis (Gr) - Grace (Eng) - in the older Classical Greek writing the word charis meant
"that which affords joy, pleasure, delight." As time moved on several other meanings
and uses developed for charis which included "grace," "favor," "gratitude," "kindness"
and more. It was in the New Testament that charis was combined with the coming and
work of Jesus Christ to capture the meaning of "unmerited favor of God toward man."
John 1:17 says, Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." Without Jesus there is
no way to obtain the NT meaning of charis, which is "undeserved favor from God." |

Jesus preached in the synagogue in Capernaum
and healed a man in the synagogue. The foundation
of this synagogue has been found. (Mark 1:21-28) |

Do I realize that God is going to reward me for my service and devotion to him?
Today I will recognize the fact that not only am I a servant
of God's,
but a servant who will be recognized by God with
rewards and praise for my faithful production in my service to him.
