October 15 - Evening

“Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

 ‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
even if someone told you.’ ”

- Acts 13:38-41

Preaching Justification by Faith in 45  AD

In 45 AD Paul and Barnabas traveled in the province of Pisidia (which is in the middle of
Turkey today). Paul’s first recorded sermon was preached in a synagogue in a city named
Antioch in Pisidia (This is not Paul’s home church of the same name, Antioch in Syria of
Acts 11:19-30 and 14:21-28, etc.).

We have in Acts 13 the text of Paul’s sermon preached in a synagogue ten years after
his Damascus Road experience. In Paul’s first recorded sermon a popular theme found in Paul’s letters to the Romans and the Galatians is already prominent – the doctrine of justification by faith.

The word justification (dikaioo in the Greek) is a legal term used in a court of law to declare a
person innocent because there are no charges, no evidence and no guilt. It is used in the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures (the Septuagint or LXX) in Deuteronomy 25:1:

“When men have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges will decide the case, acquitting (dikaioo) the innocent and condemning the guilty.”

Paul says in his first recorded message,

“Everyone who believes is set free…a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.”

Paul then warns his Jewish listeners of a warning Habakkuk wrote around the year 609 BC
while Jeremiah was preaching in Jerusalem before the Babylonian destruction of the Temple:

“Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.”
– Habakkuk 1:5 and Acts 13:41

Yes, it is hard to believe, but it is God’s plan – trust and believe to be saved; doubt and scoff to perish. It is God’s only plan – Justification by Faith.

  Christian Quote from Church History

"You are not educated if you don't know the Bible. You can't read Shakespeare or Milton without it...And with the schools now, they don't even teach it as a document."
- Christopher Hitchens

Something to Ponder??
Why would anyone go through life and face death with a hostile or indifferent attitude towards God and his savior?

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information

Kairos (Gr) - Time (Eng) - the Greek word kairos is translated “seasons.” It refers to a point in time such as a date or a critical point in time for an event or the indeterminate moment of time where something significant occurs.

The Roman historian Tacitus documents the events leading up to and following the great fire that Emperor Nero used to burn large portion of the city of Rome in 64 AD. When the public turned against Nero, he blamed the Christians. Tacitus mentions Jesus by name calling him Christus:
Nero fastened the guilt...on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of...Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome..."
(Tacitus, Annals 15.44 )

Confession to Action   Facts and Information
Am I offended by scoffers?
Do I feel I need to defend God and Truth when scoffers mock?
For sure, there is a time and place to be offended and to provide a defense for God and Truth,
but there is also a time to shake the dust off your feet and move on.
I will be patient and caring, but I will not waste my time, my energy and my emotions on scoffers.
"The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave."
- Proverbs 15:24
