June 29 - Evening
"My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you."

Accept, Desire and Seek Wisdom |
|
|
This section hinges on the word “if”, the voice of decision. Every man chooses to pursue wisdom
or to continue the path of death filled with chaos and destruction.
The word of decision, “if”, is followed by the word of result, “then.”
Verses 2:1-4 present three “if” conditions for the man to respond to:
- Accept wisdom
- Desire wisdom
- Seek wisdom
Verses 2:5-11 presents the two primary results of having positively achieved the conditions of verses 2:1-4 (accepting, desiring and seeking widow):
- First (2:5-8), see God and experience his presence in life situations
- Second (2:9-11), possess moral discernment which is the ability to recognize what is right, determine what is just and present actions that are fair.
Wisdom, God’s presence and discernment! These things will guard and protect you. |

Surveys, such as the
General Social Surveys, conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago since 1972, find that the Catholic share of the U.S. adult population has held fairly steady in recent decades at around 25%.
What this apparent stability obscures, however, is the large number of people who have left the Catholic Church. Approximately one-third of the survey respondents who say they were raised Catholic no longer describe themselves as Catholic. This means that roughly 10% of all Americans are former Catholics.
These losses, however, have been partly offset by the number of people who have changed their affiliation to Catholicism (2.6% of the adult population) but more importantly by the disproportionately high number of Catholics among immigrants to the U.S.
Latinos, who already account for roughly one-in-three adult Catholics overall, may account for an even larger share of U.S. Catholics in the future. For while Latinos represent roughly one-in-eight U.S. Catholics age 70 and older (12%), they account for nearly half of all Catholics ages 18-29 (45%).
