One of the greatest reasons for the Jews to embrace Jesus was because Moses’ own testimony concerning “a prophet like me” who would arise “from among you.” Moses warns them, “You must listen to him!”
Jesus saw in this verse a promise of his coming when he spoke in John 5:46:
“If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.” – John 5:46
The priests, Levites and other Jewish leaders knew they were to expect the “prophet” when they asked John the Baptist:
“When the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, ‘I am not the Messiah.’
They asked him, ‘Then who are you? Are you Elijah?’
He said, ‘I am not.’
‘Are you the Prophet?’
He answered, ‘No.’ – John 1:19-21
People from among the Jews consider Jesus to be “The Prophet” Moses spoke saying:
“Surely this is the Prophet.” – John 6:14
“Surely this man is the Prophet.” – John 7:40
“We have found the one Moses wrote about.” – John 1:45
After the church began in Jerusalem both Peter and Stephen appealed to Moses’ warning. They spoke of the Prophet like Moses who would arise that the people “must listen to.”
“For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’ ” – Acts 3:22-23
“This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’ ” – Acts 7:37
