December 18 - Evening
" If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
have fellowship with one another, and the blood
of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we
claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and
the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify
us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have
not sinned, we make him out to be a liar
and his word is not in us."
- First John 1:7-10

Confession of Sin |
|
|
In First John 1:7-10 the Apostle John writes about fellowship with the Lord, not about sonship. Sonship is based on being born again through faith in Jesus Christ. Fellowship is based on walking in the light as he is in the light. John focuses on maintaining this fellowship through obedience, or walking "in the light," and confession of our sins when we are not obedient, or "walk in the darkness."
Even as born again believers sin is a constant issue since we still deal with sin in our temporal lives even in as born again sons of God. And, everyone still is dealing with sin! John even says:
"If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us." - First John 1:10
So, the issue in these verses is NOT:
- Getting saved (born again);
- Losing salvation or losing sonship.
The issue that John is addressing concerns the believer who:
- is saved (born again);
- still has a sin nature (and, everyone does) in this mortal life;
- has learned the Truth of the Word of God;
- examines himself in the light of the Truth of the Word of God;
- finds himself committing some kind of sin which means he is living his Christian life in darkness and attempting to perform his Christian duties while in a state of broken fellowship with God the Father, who is his power source;
- confessing his sins so he can return to the Light and reestablish fellowship with God who is the Light, the Truth and the power to execute the Christian life
- receiving forgiveness and restoration to fellowship with the Light which then continues to reveal truth and empower the manifestation of the Spirit of God in the believer's life.
John says that if we continue to walk in the light the blood of Jesus continues to cleanse us of our human sin. When we recognize sin in our lives we are to confess the sin to God then realize that God is "faithful" and "just" to forgive that sin and restore us to fellowship. God is "faithful" because he will forgive and restore the believer every time in agreement with the New Covenant based on Jesus' blood. God is "just" because forgiveness is the fair judicial response since Jesus has already paid for the sins of humanity. Our responsibility is to know the truth, live in the light of that truth and admit our sins when we have failed to live in the truth. Then we must know that God has restored us to fellowship with him, the truth, the light and the power of our salvation. |

The Plymouth Brethren (founded in 1820) church meetins are often unstructured with no distinctino between laity and clergy. Individuals who have recognized gifts miister, but have no authority over the congregation. |

Pseudos (Gr) - Lying (Eng) - pseudos is Greek word that gives us the English word pseudo
which identifies something as false, a fraud or an fake imitation of originality such as a
pseudograph which is a false writing or a forgery. Pseudos means "a lie," "a conscious
and intentional falsehood," "whatever is not what it seems to be." In its ten appearances
in the GNT it is translated "false," "falsehood," "lie," and "lying." |

An ostracon (pottery fragment with writing) found at Tel Qasile near Jaffa (Tel Aviv), Israel is inscribed with the Hebrew words that translate:
'Gold from Ophir for Beth-horon 30 Shekels'
This supports 1 Kings 1:11-12 and 1 Chronicles 29:4 that says:
"Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir."
and,
"three thousand talents of gold (gold of Ophir) "
Josephus says that Ophir was associated with India. Interestingly, all the commodities listed in 1 Kings 10:11 and 22 are found in India, and 10:12 says it took three years to return to Israel.
Job mentions gold from Ophir in Job 22:24 and 28:16, as does Isaiah 13:12.

Gold of Ophir Ostracon here and here.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, do I confess my sins to God?
As a son of God has my fellowship been broken due to ignorance and sin?
I will often identify and confess my sin to God so that I can
return to the light to live a life of power and obedience in time. |
