December 12 - Morning
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens
to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and,
after looking at himself, goes away and
immediately forgets what he looks like."
- James 1:22-24

Accepting the Word Means to Do What it Says |
|
|
James says in James 1:21 to “accept the word planted in you.” Then in the next verse he lets his readers know what he means by “accept the word” when he says, “Do what it says.” Merely being a student of the word or one who listens to Bible teaching is not good enough. We must do what it says. There is transforming power in the truth, but it must be applied to our thinking and our doing, besides being heard. The Jews themselves had a saying among the teachers that made the same point about the study and teaching of their law: “Expounding is not the chief thing, but the doing.” Thus, the word has not been “received” until it has been practiced in life.
Those who merely hear or study the word without a transformation occurring in their life have not received the word, but instead are deceived. A deceived believer thinks they have received the
word by simply having heard and agreed with teaching without having manifested the fruit of
the word in their attitudes and actions.
James compares the person who hears the word but does not do it to a man who recognizes
himself when he is standing directly in front of a mirror. But, due the man’s mental weakness, or because the man lacks the ability to concentrate and pay attention, this same man forgets
what he looks like as soon as he walks away from his reflection in the mirror. This is not normal.
For a man not to recognize himself means something is seriously wrong. That man is like a
man who nods his head in agreement with the teaching of the Word, but never applies it to his life. |

"I am approached with the most opposite opinions and advice, and by religious men who are certain they represent the Divine will. ... I hope it will not be irreverent in me to say, that if it be probable that God would reveal his will to others, on a point so connected with my duty, it might be
supposed he would
reveal it directly to me."

In 66 AD Jewish tolerance of Gessius Florus, the Roman procurator ruling Judea, reached its end when he seized silver from the Temple. The Jews rebelled and troops were sent to crucify Jews in Jerusalem. The Messianic fervor reach its peak among the Zealots and Pharisees who began a revolt. Cestius Gallus, the Roman Governor of Syria marched on Jerusalem with 20,000, but six months later he had still failed to take the city and had lost 6,000 Roman soldiers. Eventually, though, the Romans broke through the three northern walls of Jerusalem and burned the city and the temple in 70 AD. |

Leb (Hb) - Heart (Eng) - leb is the Hebrew word for "heart" which is the seat of the moral, ethical and spiritual activity and attitudes. It is not the same as the "soul" since both are used together in Deuteronomy 6:4-5. The leb is where the thoughts, words actions and feelings originate:
"Above all else, guard your heart (leb),
for it is the wellspring of life."
- Proverbs 4:23

Part of the lintel from the Coponius (Kiphonus) Gate on the Western Wall of the New Testament temple mount can still be seen in the Western Wall immediately to the south of the Western Wall Prayer Plaza. According to the Mishnah the gates were sixteen feet wide and thirty-two feet tall. Josephus says there were four gates leading to the temple courts from the west side. (We call them Warrens, Wilsons, Barclays and Robinsons.) Barclays Gate is the Coponius (Kiphonus) Gate whose lintel is seen here and here and here. More details here. |

Do require myself to apply and practice the knowledge and
principles that I have learned from the word of God.
I will not be a hearer only, but I will do what the Word says. |
