April 8 - Morning
"After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet,
'Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the
ark of God remains in a tent.'
Nathan replied to the king,
'Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it,
for the Lord is with you.'
But that night the word of the Lord came
to Nathan, saying:
'Go and tell my servant David, "This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?...The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself
will establish a house for you: When your days are
over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will
establish the throne of his kingdom forever.' "
- Second Samuel 7:1-5, 11-13 |

The Son(s) of David in Nathan's Prophecy |
|
|
In most cases in the ancient world where Israel lived it was the responsibility of the King and the people to provide a place of rest for their deity. Here in 2 Samuel 7:1 is says that “the Lord had given him (David) rest” from war and settled him into his palace. So instead of the Israelite king building a house for his God and giving his God rest, it was the Lord who settled the King of Israel in a house and gave the King rest. This is contrary to what the pagan nations where doing at that time.
David speaks to the prophet Nathan about his plans to provide the Lord with a dwelling as luxurious as his cedar palace (the remains of which have now been identified). Nathan agrees with David, but that night God instructed Nathan to explain to David that a son of David’s would build the house or the temple in Jerusalem. The Ark of the Covenant was currently being kept in a tent set up in Jerusalem that served as its sanctuary. Priests would attend to Ark, but the Ark had not been in the tabernacle since the days of Samuel’s youth which was about 100 years before (1088 BC).
The Lord also gave a promise that He would also establish the throne of the kingdom of David’s son forever. These are the words of the promise known as the Davidic Covenant. This prophecy reported by Nathan to David would begin being fulfilled in the life of David’s son Solomon, but would extend to Jesus Christ, the Son of David who will bring ultimate fulfillment to these words. The angel Gabriel refers to this when he spoke these words to Mary:
“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” – Luke 1:31-33

The flowering plant called fraxinella, Dictamnus Albus and commonly known as burning bush, gas plant and false dittany is found in Europe, north Africa and Asia. In the growing season the entire bush is covered with fragrant, flammable oil, which can catch fire easily. The bush is not consumed since only the oil and vapor burns. (Details here and here.

I will do what the Lord has called me to do and complete the things he allows me to finish.
I will avoid beginning things God has not called me to start.
I will not force the things that God does not approve. |
